"Where are You?"

Genesis 3:8 gives a break from the devastating scene unfolding before creation.

When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard

the Lord God walking about in the garden.

Adam and Eve actually heard the footsteps of the Creator of the universe! The One whose words formed everything they saw. The One whose breath gave them their lives.

Were those footsteps loud and echoing? Were they soft and regal? Did the leaves rustle as the Master passed by? Did the twigs break as He stepped on them? One thing is for sure - each step was a reminder of the intimacy with God that humanity lost as they listened and obeyed the enemy's cunning voice, instead of God's.

But in His lovingkindness, God still came to them and asked, "Where are you?"

Now, that was not an inquiry of location, but a question of a heart condition. A condition that could not have been answered by the blame game (as Adam and Eve did that day). It is one that could only be resolved by the shedding of blood. Only the sacrifice of a blameless life can restore this broken intimacy with God.

In the depth of their sin, God came. And He has done it ever since. Two thousand years ago, God came in the form of man and laid down His life as the blameless sacrifice that restores completely the unbroken relationship humanity once had wit

h God. He did this so that when He asks us today, "Where are you?" Whatever our answer may be, we can draw near to Him because of what Jesus has done for us.

And so we may once more enjoy the sound of God's footsteps in the garden.
