A Child’s Faith

Blogs on this website normally don’t appear until Monday morning, but a message in my heart kept burning since we left VBS tonight. I knew I can’t wait until Monday to share this story. It’s a moment that encouraged my faith and challenged the condition of my heart before God.
Like any typical Bible Seed class, we read the verse in Galatians 5 that talked about “belonging to Jesus.” The kiddos watched two videos about what it’s really like to give their hearts fully to God. We talked about how Jesus is like our coach in life. Like the coach in any sport, Jesus directs us not just so we can win in life, but because He loves us! Then it was the altar call - that portion of VBS when I ask who among the kids want to give their hearts to Jesus. We’ve been doing this for three days now and I was pretty sure most of the kiddos have had an opportunity to do this. But tonight, the Holy Spirit prompted me to ask the children specifically, “How many of you are ready to follow Jesus fully as your Coach in life, to live for Him?” For a few seconds everyone was still, including the adults. Just as I thought nobody would respond, a little child from the youngest team raised his hand and yelled, “I do!” Then he came running to the front. As he did, the other older children started following him to the front of the stage. And I led them in prayer to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior – their ultimate coach in life.
That little boy may be sound asleep now. After all, it was a fun day at VBS! What he may not know is how he opened my heart to childlike faith once more. See, as adults we tend to think too much. Not that it’s bad in itself, but it becomes dangerous when in our overthinking, we block out God’s voice.
As that little one ran towards the front of the stage as fast as his legs could carry him so he could give his heart to Jesus, I felt God say, “That child’s faith is the kind that pleases Me.” In my heart, I prayed that I will continuously be as excited to run to God like him and say, “Jesus, I am all Yours. I am holding nothing back. I am fully sold out to You.”
That child may not have a theological treatise. Possibly, minimal doctrinal convictions. But what he has pleased God. And that’s a childlike faith.
