You are God’s Masterpiece

For we are God’s masterpiece...
He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT, emphasis mine)

Masterpiece. The Greek word behind this is the word poiēma, which is the root for the word “poem.” I don’t know about you but I admire with people with the knack for stringing words together. I love it best when the words paint a picture. When the message hits home.
A few years ago, I worked with a team of writers and editors in our church. Our task: a monthly newsletter of 150 words. Now, it’s easy to say, “Just 150 words? That’s nothing!” Nope. It was like pulling teeth every month.
Discard clichés. Replace with creative lines. Cut out the unnecessary. Get to the point. Say much in a few words. And for a person who writes and speaks like an amplified Bible, this was rough. I guess that is a major reason why I love it when God says we are His masterpiece.
He created us with His love, carefully designing details in our lives as a master wordsmith does with a poem. But history shows all too well how disappointments can break us. How sin and guilt can weigh down. How shame can torment. But the good news is, our story does not end there.
Jesus came to die on the cross and resurrect from the dead so we can be made new in Him.
Fear. Shame. Guilt. Sin. Disease. Brokenness. Pain. He took them all on the cross. As He hung on that wooden pole gasping for air, He looked forward to the day that you and I will realize that He gave us His all so we can be called,
Redeemed. Healed. Forgiven. Whole. Loved. Treasured…
His masterpiece.
Now, go and tell others what Jesus did. So that they, too, will know that they are His masterpiece.
